Master of Science in Engineering Management

Welcome to the Enterprise and Logistics Engineering (ELE) website at FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing (CEC). The Enterprise and Logistics Engineering (ELE) unit houses graduate degrees in engineering management and logistics engineering. The ELE programs aim to provide students with the deep knowledge and insight to be successful managers and leaders in their industry. Two graduate degree programs offered within ELE include the Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) and the Master of Science in Logistics Engineering (MSLE). The MSEM degree is offered in both in-person and online modalities.

The MSEM program is designed to offer a tailored degree for those engineers who would like to advance to managerial positions and wish to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for success.

Students will not only be exposed to the theory but also learn from industry insiders and a curriculum geared toward addressing real-life industry problems. Program graduates will have the practical knowledge, insider expertise, and problem-solving skills, ready for job placement right after graduation.

Admission
STEP 1 – Online Application
  • Create an account on the Graduate Admissions website and login to complete the FIU Master’s Program Online Application.
  • Click “Create User Account.” Please note your password for future use. Use your account to enter the system to complete the application which will take approximately 15 minutes.
  • You may complete the online application without entering your TOEFL scores, statement of purpose, and recommendation letters. These documents may be submitted later via mail.
  • Email ele@fiu.edu to confirm that your application has been submitted.
STEP 2 – Application Requirements

Please submit the following items with your online application, via email, or mail to the address below after completion of the online application.

  • A 4-year Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, computer science, mathematics or STEM discipline  from an accredited institution, or, in the case of foreign students, from an institution comparable or equivalent to a US degree for further study at the graduate level; or, a bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of one year work experience in the broad areas of engineering and/or technology and programming experience with a minimum of “B” average in the upper-level (the last 60 credit hours). The applicant whose GPA does not meet the minimum GPA requirement may be considered for conditional admission.
  • Official transcript of each previously attended university (undergraduate and graduate) in an envelope sealed by the degree-granting institution.

International Students:

  • If an official transcript is not in English, the applicant must obtain two sets of transcripts: one to be submitted to FIU in the original language and the other to be translated by an official translation agency (or certified translator).
  • Official proof of degree: a notarized copy of the original diploma is required if the degree is granted from a foreign institution not posted on the official transcripts.
  • International applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate English language proficiency through one of the following:
    • 80 on the iBT TOEFL (equivalent to 550 on the paper-based version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language);
    • 6.5 overall on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); • 53 Pearson Test of English – Academic;
    • Cambridge English – Advanced;
    • 110 Duolingo English Test – Combined
    • English Language Institute certification of satisfactory completion of all content areas with at least level six (6) proficiency;
    •  Applicants who hold an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited institution where the language of instruction is English.

An applicant who does not meet the minimum GPA requirements must submit one of the following:

  • (Optional): Statement of purpose: A well-written statement describing your professional goals and reasons for pursuing the MSEM degree at Florida International University. (May be submitted via email.)
  • (Optional):  Resume: A current resume is required, which may include education, professional training, internship, and employment history (full time and part time employment). (May be submitted via email.)
  • (Optional):  Three letters of recommendation from employers, faculty, or professional associates. (May be submitted via email.)

Courses

The MSEM program requires 30 credit hours of 10 coursework from three clusters of graduate courses. The first consists of 3 core courses, 3 business elective courses, and 4 elective courses in a specialized track.

Core Courses (3 courses, 9 credit hours)
  • EIN 5226 Total Quality Management for Engineers: Fundamentals of TQM and its historical development. Integration of QC and management tools, QFD, benchmarking, experimental design for scientific management.
  • ESI 6455 Advanced Engineering Project Management: This course covers entire phases of project management including selection, planning, budgeting, scheduling, monitoring, and control. It focuses on the management of engineering projects through case studies and independent research assignments.
  • EIN 5359 Industrial Financial Decisions: The use of financial techniques and data in planning, controlling and coordinating industrial activities. This course will familiarize the student with accounting concepts and analytical methods.
Business electives (select 3 courses, 9 credit hours)
  • EIN 6160 Management of Innovation and Technology: The course provides an integrated view of management of technology. The combination of theory and practice addresses the challenges of globalization, time compression, and technology integration.
  • EIN 6324 Technology Entrepreneurship: Entrepreneurial process, evaluation of technology, startup operations and strategy, business plans and venture capital, intellectual property and rights, growth and technology management.
  • EIN 6155 Business Plan Development: This course deals with the critical decisions and action steps that entrepreneurs must make in both planning and executing a new venture. It also covers how to develop an effective written plan.
  • EIN 5123 Industrial/Technological Marketing for Engineering: Fundamental concepts for industrial marketing including industrial goods, services, customers, and demands; Industrial procurement and buying behavior; and industrial market segmentation and strategy.
  • LAW 5072 Business Law and Intellectual Property for Engineers and Entrepreneurs: Focused on the formation, governance, operation, and legal protection of business; coverage includes contracts, malpractice, product liability, employment law, and intellectual property law.
  • EGN 5550 Risk Analysis in Business Concept Development for Engineers and Entrepreneurs: It integrates assumptions, risk/forecasting with engineering approach to new business development. The course uses exercises, cases and projects to develop practical experience with course theories.
  • EGN 5644 Commercializing Innovation: Product development/process, innovation, commercialization; needs analysis; market segmentation; value proposition; prototyping, packaging and branding; modeling costs and margins; hands-on practice.
  • ESI 5010C Forecasting and Demand Management: Forecasting overview. Times series methods. Regression methods. Advanced forecasting models. Demand planning. Pricing and revenue optimization with capacity constraints.
  • EIN 6357 Advanced Engineering Economy: Review of engineering economy and the evaluation of advanced manufacturing systems. Evaluation of alternative capital investments considering income taxes, depreciation, inflation, risk and uncertainty.

Schedule

The MSEM program is taught during regular, 15-week semesters, and courses are offered in a mix of delivery modes, in-person, hybrid, or online. The program can be completed in one year if the student follows the full-time schedule.

Tuition

The total cost of the Master of Science in Engineering Management In-Person program is based on State Tuition Rate. Tuition will be calculated each semester based on the number of courses enrolled. Students must pay for courses at the beginning of each semester and may select to complete their payments in one lump sum or via a payment plan.
